Zach Valley, Bobby Fehr eye gold
Northampton's wrestling team is shooting for a top-five finish at this weekend's District 11 3A wrestling tournament.
The action will take place Friday and Saturday at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium, as the K-Kids gear up for the individual part of the season which should bear the most fruit for them.
"We have a good chance to be in the top five," said head coach Seth Lisa. "I thought we've done a good job in all the tournaments we've been in this year, so we're hoping that this weekend will be the same."
Seniors Zach Valley (126) and Bobby Fehr (160) give the Kids their best shot at winning gold this weekend.
Both were district and regional runner-ups last year, but both enter the field this week as favorites to win their respective weight classes.
Valley enters with a 30-3 mark, while Fehr enjoyed a 26-3 regular season. Both figure to earn top two-seeds when the committee releases the brackets Thursday night.
Freshman Danny Moran (106) and juniors Michael Scheetz (113) and Todd Hetrick (132) round out the Kids list of wrestlers that should find themselves in the mix for top-four finishes.
Moran (26-5) has the most potential to steal gold this year in his first district tournament, but he'll have plenty of competition with Luke Werner (Liberty), Dylan Brown (Freedom) and Tyson Klump (Nazareth) battling for top spots.
Scheetz (18-3), who took second last year at districts at 106, could land in the finals again, as Liberty freshman KJ Fenstermacher (32-3) could contend for the title as well.
"Zach and Bobby have never won districts, so this is a big opportunity for them to cross that off their list," Lisa said. "That's definitely the goal for them and they're feeling good about their chances."
Northampton advanced six wrestlers to regionals last year and Lisa thinks they can at least get to that point again.
"I think everyone in our lineup has a chance to compete for a medal," he said. "We're looking to finish in the top five and we're excited about what can happen this weekend for us."
