Resident not happy with snow removal in borough

Coplay resident Paul Brem is not satisfied with snow removal in the borough.

Brem appeared before council Feb. 11 to express his disatisifcation with the borough's removal of snow.

"I was wondering if there is going to be any type of snow removal on Second Street because it's a snow emergency route," he said.

Council President Louis Bodish said he could not provide a definitive answer whether the borough would declare a snow emergency. The public works department and police chief are the individuals who issue a snow emergency.

"When a snow emergency is proclaimed, vehicles should be moved so they can plow the street," Councilman Charles Sodl said. "Unfortunately, that is not happening. Residents are not following the snow emergency ordinance."

Borough police are refraining from issuing tickets. Police are giving residents a chance to return home from work so they can move their vehicles.

Brem said after he moved his car during the previous storm, the plow never circled around a second time to plow the remaining snow. Councilman William Leiner told Brem the police need to be contacted immediately and dispatched to the area in question.

Also during the meeting, it was announced Coplay had enough salt to combat the Feb. 13 storm, with half a ton remaining. Bodish said the borough has been trying to purchase more salt, however, many salt suppliers are out of salt.

In other business, Howard Lieberman provided an update to council on the City Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) application.

After being rejected by Harrisburg initially, Coplay, Whitehall and Catasauqua are in the process of drafting a new joint contract to submit to Harrisburg.

"This is still very active and very alive," Lieberman said. "There has been no consideration of pulling or cutting back." The CRIZ allows certain tax payments from businesses to be given back to the borough in an effort to spur development and redevelopment projects.

Also, council approved a renewal of the lease agreement with the Commitment to Family and Community, in effect until Feb. 28, 2015.

Carl Luckenbach was also appointed to the Coplay Planning Commission with a term ending Dec. 31, 2018.
