Coplay council introduced to banner program
Coplay Borough's Sponsor a Street Banner Program has been formally introduced to members of the Coplay Borough Council.
Councilman Charles Sodl unveiled two of the banners at the Feb. 4 council meeting. The banners feature images of the historic Saylor Cement Kilns and the borough municipal building.
This program allows businesses and citizens to sponsor a banner for $250. The banners will be displayed throughout Coplay, starting on both Second and Chestnut streets.
The project is sponsored by the Coplay Planning Commission. The deadline to purchase a banner is March 15.
Proceeds from the program will go toward the purchasing of welcome signs that will be placed at various entry points to Coplay.
In other business, resident John Schreiner said the borough should consider renewing the social hall lease with the Commitment to Family and Community (CFC) organization. He said people don't seem to pay too much attention to community organizations like CFC "until we don't have them anymore, that's when they miss them."
He listed a number of ways CFC has benefited the community, including donating money to a local church and allowing other organizations, such as Relay for Life, to use the facility free of charge.
CFC has a year-to-year lease agreement with the borough since 2011.
Also during the meeting, borough Police Chief Vincent Genovese praised Scott Weller, who is temporarily in charge of snow removal in the borough. Genovese said Weller has been diligent in removing snow during recent winter storms.
He said when a snow emergency is declared, the borough attempts to work with the plows to maneuver around cars parked in the streets. He said citizens typically cooperate with the borough and only tow cars if it's absolutely necessary.
In his fire department report, Coplay Fire Chief Matthew Buskaritz said the fire company responded to 10 incidents in January, three of which were broken water pipes.
Mayor Joseph Bundra praised the Coplay fire crews and neighboring townships for working side by side during a fire that took place at 18 S. Second St. Jan. 23. Bundra made note the fire took place in row homes and "these guys responded so well and so fast, that they were available to retain the fire to one unit."
