School board member is honored by state organization
Whitehall-Coplay School District Superintendent John Corby recognized the members of the Whitehall-Coplay School Board at their meeting Jan. 13.
Corby introduced each board member and recognized their years of service. President Tina Koren is serving in her 11th year, Vice President Robert Kolb is serving in his fifth year, after 37 years of working as an educator in the district. Eileen Abruzzi is serving in her 17th year and received recognition from the Pennsylvania School Board Association at the meeting.
Board member Josef Fragnito is serving in his 14th year, Patty Gaugler is serving in her third year, Wayne Grim is serving in his 10th year and Owen Eberhart is serving on the board for a second time and is serving in his 21st year collectively. Arthur Taschler Jr. is serving in his 11th year and Joyce Wheeler is serving in her 19th year.
Corby spoke of the dedication and commitment that the members of the school board give to the district for their nonpaid volunteer positions.
"As elected volunteers, they are the community's voice in our school district and they make sure that the communities concerns are heard and the unique challenges, values, cultures and circumstances of our community are reflected in how our students are educated," he said.
Corby continued,"What gives them the most satisfaction is when they are present for the day-to-day activities in our district. They are here supporting our students in the academics, arts and athletic arenas," he said. "Look around at a concert, a play, an open house, an athletic contest, a student recognition or graduation ceremony and you will see members, plural, of the Whitehall-Coplay School Board in attendance."
Corby asked those at the meeting give the members a round of applause. Also at the meeting, the board authorized a refund for the per capita and real estate taxes. When asked after the meeting, Business Manager J. Michael Malay, Jr said the refund amount was $4150.61.
"This is due to duplicate payments and reassessments," Malay said.
In other business, the board approved June 6 as the graduation date for the class of 2014. The commencement ceremony will take place 7 p.m. at Stabler Arena.
