LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Public works crew is busy this winter

Coplay Public Works employees have been busy lately clearing streets of snow, picking up discarded Christmas trees and removing holiday lights on Chestnut and Second streets.

The busy schedule began immediately after Christmas.

The constant barrage of inclement weather has brought out the public works crew, day and night. The employees have been busy spreading salt on the roads and clearing the basins.

Also, potholes have surfaced with moderate increases in temperatures the past week. Public Works Director Dan Pavelko said the condition of the roads has kept personnel busy.

Road salt is currently being replenished. Over the last several storms, 150 tons of the agent was spread on roads. It is too early to report whether the budgeted amounts for salt and manpower have been surpassed.

Last week, public works personnel took 150 discarded Christmas trees to a Freemansburg site, where the trees are ground into mulch. Crews report live tree purchases are considerably less than a decade ago.
