In mid November, 36 Liberty HS juniors and sophomores spent a day familiarizing themselves with Lehigh University's academic environment and performing "hands-on creativity building activities." In addition to tackling some challenging exercises, the high school students got a campus tour, met with Lehigh students, and learned about the college application process.
Angela Scott, Lehigh's director for academic diversity and outreach, said the goal was to have the "students realize that college is a possibility in their lives."
The three dozen students spent their afternoon in the Wilbur Powerhouse with Dr. Michael Lehman and Professor Marc de Vinck guiding them through the assembly of a laser cut lantern and performing tasks designed to get their creative juices flowing.
Sophomore Leticia Patino-Flores said that the experience would definitely cause her to consider attending Lehigh to major in psychology.
Liberty Principal Harrison Bailey III explained that students who attended were nominated by the high school's department chairs and hailed the visit and exercises for encouraging teamwork and for their spirit of entrepreneurism.
