Hoop Group Showcase this weekend

Once every year, Parkland High School hosts the annual Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase in which some of best boys high school basketball talent in the area and nation comes together for an exciting day of action.

Many Division I athletes and a number of future-NBA players have dazzled audiences at the LV Hoop Group during its existence. In it's 19th year of existence, the showcase will once again be a podium for some competitive basketball and premier talent.

Bethlehem Catholic will get things underway at noon against one of the top teams in the state at the Class AAA level in Abington Heights (Clarks Summit) of District 2. According to PennLive's rankings, Abington Heights comes in as the No. 9 ranked team in Class AAA. As of Monday, the Comets boasted a 12-1 record.

The Comets are led by 6-foot-2 senior guard J.C. Show (committed to Bucknell University) and senior center/forward Evan Maxwell (committed to Liberty University).

After a 1-5 start to the season, Becahi has recovered to look like the team many had anticipated. The Golden Hawks have won five straight games, including seven of their last eight as of Monday. Seniors Jamal Aziz and Justin Lenzer, as well as junior Freddie Simmons, have been big parts of the team's success.

The top team in PennLive's Class AAAA rankings, District 12's Roman Catholic (12-2), will square off against the Patrick School (NJ) at 1:40 p.m. The Patrick School is ranked No. 7 in NJHoops' rankings, and currently sits at 7-4 overall.

Roman Catholic's Rashann London (Drexel University) and Shep Garner (Penn State University) will be key pieces to the puzzle as they look to take down their opponents to the northeast.

It won't be an easy task, however, as Patrick School is led by 6-8 power forward Angel Delgado, the 44th ranked prospect in the nation according to Rivals.com (45th in ESPN.com's 100). He's listed as the 11th ranked power forward in the nation according to ESPN, and has committed to Seton Hall University to continue his hoops career.

Freshman Jamir Harris is the No. 3 ranked player in the state in the class of 2017 according to NJHoops, and 5-9 sophomore Bryce Aiken is the No. 3 ranked player in the state in his class according to NJHoops.

Parkland will take the court at 3:20 p.m. against Gill St. Bernards (Gladstone, NJ), which is NJHoops' No. 13-ranked team at 9-2-and the top prospect of the showcase for any class. Sophomore guard Tyus Battle (6-5, 180), the No. 10 ranked prospect according to ESPN (No. 11 according to Rivals.com) in the nation in his class, has been a dominant scorer all season.

The host Trojans, who are also getting some recognition in Class AAAA, are 12-2 on the season. Their two losses were by a combined six points (including their 63-61 defeat to Easton on Jan. 13).

But the Trojans, now winners of three straight, seemed to have found their groove with three tough conference wins in a row. Seniors Nick Rindock and Justin Zajko have been the scoring leaders all season, but freshman Sam Iorio and senior transfer Ryan Keller have also helped in that department.

The leadership and playmaking ability by Parkland's senior point guard Jimmy Hahn makes this well-oiled machine operate.

In the final game, Westtown will take on Wilbraham and Monson (Wilbraham, MA) in a matchup of two of the top prep schools in the nation with a number of future Division I players taking center stage. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.

Wilbraham and Monson's senior center Goodluck Okonobah (6-9, 220) is committed to play college ball at UNLV. He is the No. 32-ranked player nationally according to Rivals.com. He's the top ranked player in Massachusetts.

Junior shooting guard Curtis Cobb is the 130th-ranked player in the class of 2015 according to Rivals.com. Max Hoetzel is the other Division I talent on Wilbraham and Monson, and he'll suit up for Indiana University next year.

Leading Westtown is 6-6 senior forward Jared Nickens-the 93rd ranked player nationally according to Scouts.com-who is committed to play at the University of Maryland. Maryland is also looking at junior center Georgios Papagiannis (7-0, 215) as well.
