Maze Garden: Community must be involved in relocation

Dear Editor:

I was one of the students at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19, and I would like to put forth my own concerns in regard to the Maze Garden sale.

First, I think that the community should be involved in planning the move of the Maze Garden. Without asking people who participate and partake of the Maze Garden, the city risks alienating community members from the fruits – both literal and figurative – of their labor.

The new Maze Garden must be located in a central location within a walkable distance of the current Maze Garden.

Second, I strongly believe that all potential stakeholders should be consulted on the planned development. The building(s) planned, from my understanding, seek to house Lehigh, Moravian, and DeSales students, benefit local businesses through increased commercial traffic, and provide the city and school district with property tax dollars. Nobody in our coalition is opposed to development. However, we do want our voices heard in regard to both the process and end result, as those "on the ground" will be living with the choices made.

This is a great opportunity for the community to come together and discuss a mutually beneficial result for all parties involved.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Joseph Celentano
