Marcus named school board president
During the Dec. 3 reorganization meeting, newly elected Parkland School Board members were installed, and new officers were chosen.
Robert Cohen, Mark Hanichak and Barry Long are returning after successful re-election in November while David Hein won his first term on the board.
The foursome took the oath of office, with Cohen and Hein present, while Long and Hanichak participated via telephone.
A special welcome was extended to Hein since he is a newcomer, although he is well-known for his service on the Community Advisory Council and his regular attendance at school board meetings.
"I look forward to working with the administration and the staff," Hein said.
His wife teaches kindergarten at Kratzer Elementary School, and his daughter is a student at the high school.
Roberta Marcus, who joined the board in 1995, was elected president. She served as president three times in the past and was currently vice president.
A fervent advocate of public eduction, Marcus has received numerous awards at the state and national levels.
She held executive positions with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association for several years and served a term as president in 2010.
Marcus offered comments on her election to the presidency.
"I look on this work as a partnership," Marcus said. "We are a team committed to the work of the school district.
"You have heard me say it many times, the decisions we make here in this room have a direct impact in our classrooms and on our students' success.
"It's my privilege to serve alongside all of you here at this table, in the audience, and in the greater school community.
"Together we will continue to make our school district the best there is."
David Kennedy was elected vice president of the board. He is a longtime member who has been a strong supporter of Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, where he held positions of leadership.
