Girls tweaking their lineup
"We don't know where we are yet as far as preparation for the upcoming season," says Jeff Jacksits. "But it's a good problem to have."
Jacksits and the Konkrete Kids open their season Friday night.
The K-Kids, who take on Pleasant Valley in a nonleague game, have 15 girls on this year's roster and Jacksits says "we're still learning to play together."
"We're trying to figure out who'll be playing at this spot or another. They are all exceptional and we've got to find the right combination," added the coach, who's starting his 10th year at the helm of the K-Kids.
"Leandra Sterner (all Lehigh Valley Conference last year) will definitely be our starting point guard. But, from there we'll see what we have," Jacksits said.
There are six seniors (including Sterner) and they all were starters on last year's team, which made the District 11 tournament.
Welcomed back are Autumn Klucsarits, Zeniyah Sanders, Erica Filipovits, Amber Farnholtz, and Kayla Csencsits. Juniors are Amber Saylor, Ali Reppert, and Giovanna Martinez with sophomores Sophia Eckroth, Lauren Sterner, Lizzie Stonewall, and Meghan Hemingway and freshman Taylor Deutsch and Aja Blount rounding out the squad.
In the K-Kids' scrimmage at Southern Lehigh last week Jacksits saw a lot of everything.
"We were the good, the bad, and the ugly. We started good, then looked bad, but recovered later and were OK," Jacksits said. "[They are] still learning. They all have good traits and some weaknesses. We're trying to find the right combinations. I have 10 or 11 girls that could be starters right now and that gives us depth for the LVC season."
The Kids, who don't play their first LVC game until Friday, Dec. 13 at Whitehall, take on Pleasant Valley this Friday then face Allen in the Yasso-Rothrock Christmas Classic at Freedom High School on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Then, visit Holy Redeemer next Tuesday.
"With a new league being formed, this could be the last time for some of our nonleague games," said Jacksits.
As for the Yasso-Rothrock Classic this Saturday, girl-boy doubleheaders will be played at Freedom, Bethlehem Catholic and Liberty high schools with Northampton facing Allen and Whitehall versus Freedom at Freedom.
Easton versus Dieruff and Parkland versus Becahi will take place at Becahi and Central Catholic versus Nazareth and Liberty versus Emmaus will take place at Liberty.
