The sport utility vehicle that struck a 21-year-old Allentown man just after 11 p.m. Oct. 28 as he crossed Tilghman Street, South Whitehall Township, was a police vehicle.
State Police Troop M Fogelsville reported David A. Gross, 52, of Allentown, was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe south in the left turn lane of Parkway Road, when he proceeded to make a left turn onto Tilghman Street through a steady green traffic signal, when he struck Jacob B. Vassallo.
State police say Vassallo, who was wearing dark clothing, was crossing the road at a point other than a marked crosswalk when he was struck in the right lane of Tilghman Street with the front of the SUV.
He sustained a moderate injury and was transported by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.
Vassallo was charged with crossing outside a crosswalk, police say.
Gross, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured.
South Whitehall Police Lt. John Christman commented on the accident via email with The Press.
"This was a very unfortunate incident," Christman said. "Cpl. David Gross was on duty and driving a township SUV at the time of the accident.
"Whenever a South Whitehall police officer is involved in a reportable crash with a township vehicle, by policy that accident is investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police," he emailed. "The state police did conduct a thorough investigation of the accident."
Gross was not charged, he emailed.
