Whitehall Township is putting its foot down on property owners who fail to pay their garbage refuse bills.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. informed the Board of Commissioners recently that the solicitor's office completed filing 80 liens for unpaid garbage bills.

"This covered delinquencies from 2011 and 2012," Hozza said.

Due to delinquent accounts, the township has had to make up the difference to pay its private refuse hauler.

The filing of the liens is public notice to those who have not paid their 2013 refuse collection bills. Those property owners will be the next in line for liens in 2014, according to the township.

When a municipal lien is filed, the property owner is subject to paying the original amount owed, along with a late fee, penalty and legal fees.

"A few of the property owners have already made payments and thus had their liens satisfied," Hozza said.

In other business, Hozza noted the township received a $24,090 dividend check from its Workers Compensation insurance for a good claims balance.
