'Fisk Family Fugues'
The Bach Choir of Bethlehem presents "Fisk Family Fugues," a Gala Concert and Fundraiser featuring Eliot Fisk, guitar virtuoso, and his family, 8 p.m. Oct. 12, Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University, Bethlehem.
"Fisk Family Fugues" is conceived especially for The Bach Choir Gala by Fisk, a world-renowned guitar virtuoso and a favorite of Bach Festival audiences.
In its sixth annual Gala Concert, The Bach Choir continues its recent legacy of presenting Gala events with world-class guest artists in different musical genres, all of whom have connections with the music of Bach.
Past presentations have included Yo-Yo Ma, Dave Brubeck, Emma Kirkby, Tiempo Libre, Hilary Hahn, and The Swingle Singers.
For this year's Gala, Fisk is joined by his wife, celebrated guitarist Zaira Meneses, and their 12-year-old daughter Raquel, who has received recognition as an extraordinary young pianist.
The family trio will light up the stage with a program including works by Bach, Chopin and Mendelssohn, as well as Spanish and Latin repertoire.
Reviewing a 2011 performance in which Eliot Fisk and Zaira Meneses played together, The New York Times stated:
"Mr. Fisk's account of the Bach Chaconne was a fine balance of focused introspection and incendiary virtuosity … Zaira Menses devoted her solo set to an arresting performance of Leo Brouwer's swirling 'Paisaje Cubano con Campanas ' … a richly shaded account, full of slides and other colorful touches … in a handful of Chopin waltzes, transcribed as duets by Mr. Fisk, the sound was remarkably unified and so full of character that these quintessentially pianistic pieces sounded thoroughly natural on the guitar."
Raquel Fisk begins the Gala program with "Serenata Espanola" by Malts, which she played May 4 in Carnegie Hall, and includes Mendelssohn's "Song without Words," a Chopin "Nocturne" or "Waltz," and Bach's C minor Prelude and Fugue.
The whole family will then join in Bach's "Prelude and Fugue" from Book One of "The Well Tempered Clavier," with Raquel playing the Prelude on the piano followed by Eliot and Zaira playing an arrangement of the Fugue for guitar duo.
Zaira will include the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro of Bach BWV 998, as well as a plentiful helping of Spanish and Latin and the first half will end with three Chopin waltzes in a version for two guitars already made popular by Eliot and Zaira. Eliot will include either a Spanish or Paganini set and feature at least one of his own arrangements of a Bach Suite that he has not yet played in Bethlehem.
Eliot Fisk presents "Guitar Aerobics and The Poetry of Technique," a free workshop, 7:30 p.m. Oct 11, Foy Hall, Moravian College.
The workshop is intended for fans, students and lovers of guitar music. It is open to everyone: young and old, classical, jazz, rock, folk, beginner, intermediate or advanced guitarists. Bring your guitar or simply come and listen, meet the master, and join in a question and answer session.
Fisk's intent is to make the traditional master class format participatory. Instead of sitting and eavesdropping on a private lesson, everyone actively plays.
Fisk will introduce exercises that allow for all types of guitarists at all levels. Each person is invited to participate in the manner of an aerobics class where each person can do some part of an exercise at his or her own level. Basic aspects of music theory and harmony are integrated into the exercises so that the ear is engaged as well as the fingers.
No reservations are required for the workshop.
The Bach Choir of Bethlehem's Gala evening begins with a benefactor cocktail reception, dinner and auction at 5 p.m. followed by the "Fisk Family Fugues" concert at 8 p.m., and a post-concert "meet and greet" with the artists for benefactors and patrons.
