'Big Heads' shows big hearts for little boy

Six-year-old Joshua Miller of Fleetwood lost his father, Todd Miller, 41, suddenly on Sept. 10.

It's been a tough time for the little first grader and his mother Lisa, since Todd's death, but the folks at Big Heads Grill and Ice Cream, Mauch Chunk Road, Coplay, are helping to ease their burden by raising money to start a college fund for Josh.

Don Stout, manager of Big Heads, who worked with Todd Miller for 15 years at Teva Pharmaceuticals, explained the reason for the fundraiser.

"Everyone who knew Todd knew what a great guy he was … a great dad and family man … and a great friend," Stout said. "That's why I wanted to do something to help his family after this terrible tragedy."

Ten percent of all money brought in from food and drink sales, and all of the money brought in from fun activities at the restaurant's fundraiser Sept. 28 will go toward a college fund set up by Josh's grandfather and Todd's father, Thomas Duff.

There were face painting, tattoos, a pop artist painting on site, a 50/50 raffle, as well as rubber bracelets sold at the event.

"The bracelets say 'I Love Dorks' because when they were dating, Todd gave Lisa a T-shirt that said the same thing," explained Stout's wife, Lisa. "We sold them for $5 a piece and everyone bought them.

"I can't wait to see how many we sell!"

Jack Undercuffer, owner of Big Heads, was happy to host this event for such a great cause.

"It's great to see such a turn out for this cute little guy," Undercuffer said. "I'm happy to be a part of it."

Todd's parents, who showed up about an hour before Josh and his mom arrived, were pleased to see the huge turnout.

"This is great," Duff said. "It's unbelievable to see how close all their friends were."

Juan Ramos, a close friend and colleague of Todd's, said the group worked together at Teva.

"I remember hiring Todd over 15 years ago and we've been friends ever since," Ramos said.

The Brandywine Elementary School student and little recipient of all of this attention had no clue what all the fuss was about as he walked around the restaurant.

"This is so much fun," Josh said, as he had his photo taken with just about everyone at the event.

Anyone who was unable to attend the event, and who would like to donate to Josh's college fund are being asked to send a check, made out to Thomas Duff, to Bachman, Kulik and Reinsmith Funeral Home, 1629 Hamilton St., Allentown, PA 18102.
