LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Reps agree: Rain ruins roads

Most of the township representatives at the recent six-township meeting said they have had a lot of work to do on dirt roads because of the frequent hard rains.

Heidelberg Township Roadmaster Kevin Huber said he is fighting the weather.

One 4-1/2 inch downpour required repair to drainage systems.

He is also working on the turnback of Werley's Corner Road behind the municipal building. The section of road has to be given to PennDOT before it can be turned over to the individuals who own the abutting property.

Lynn Township Roadmaster Bruce Raber said a class he recently took suggested replacing pipes with one size larger than what seemed necessary.

"It seemed foolish at the time but with the heavy rains, it seems they knew what they were talking about," Raber said.

Lowhill Township's Carl Kressley said his road crew is fixing dirt roads, replacing a pipe, mowing shoulders and doing bridge maintenance.

Weisenberg Supervisor Bob Milot asked if any of the townships have been hit with lower weight limits on bridges.

Kressley said they have some at 3-ton limits?

Raber said the water comes off the mountain in Lynn and hits the dirt roads. Every other week he has to work on them.

"We are trying to build the roads up so the force of the water will go into the fields instead of down the roads," he said. Oil and chipping has been done in Ontelaunee Park and the township is doing its second round of mowing.

Huber said they used to be able to scrape the dirt roads in spring and spray them and it would be good for most of the season.

Kressley said the sumac bushes are really growing and need trimming.

Township Manager Jeff Bartlett of North Whitehall said the grass in the ball parks is too tall but it is due to the constant rain.

The township crew is repairing a small bridge and doing micro-surfacing. Oil and chipping is complete for the year.

"The big issue is Sand Spring Road and Route 309, which was opened in time for school," Bartlett said. "The utility company was paid to move a pole, which is in the roadway, but it hasn't been done yet.

Bartlett said three sticks and a few leaves are enough to block stormwater drains.

Washington Township Roadmaster Tom Dengler said he has caught up with the mowing, though the grass just keeps growing. Some trees need trimming.

Milot said the concrete floor for the warehouse in the Industrial Park has been laid and girders are going up. They have been able to crush on-site shale for a road base.

Weisenberg Township Secretary Donald Brein-inger said the four townships had signed an agreement to buy a roller but now they are waiting for county approval.
