Girls soccer winners in four of last five
The Northampton girls varsity soccer team has kicked into high gear recently, by winning four of their last five contests, including a decisive 10-0 win over William Allen High School in a game that was postponed until Tuesday night.
Northampton coach Gus Belaires has continually commented that the focus during this rebuilding year with the team is on, "getting everyone focused on playing soccer and working together as one team."
This focus seems to be paying off as Northampton has rebounded from what started off as a tough season to an evenly split conference record of 4-4.
Leading the team for Northampton is senior Leandra Sterner.
Sterner has been tearing up the field this season for Northampton, scoring a total of 16 goals and making two assists. Sterner's recent accomplishments on the field include two hat tricks against Freedom on Sept. 17, and William Allen on Tuesday night.
Also adding to the scoring totals for Northampton on Tuesday night were Sophia Benes, Sara Fribance and Erica Filipovits, each with 2 goals apiece. Northampton's Brianna Dotter also contributed with one goal scored.
After beginning the last week with a 4-0 victory over Freedom High School, Northampton battled against Allentown Central Catholic in a home game on Sept. 19. The game remained scoreless in the first period but Allentown came back in the second to score two, making the final score bitter 2-0 loss for Northampton.
Goalkeeper Anna Keffer stood strong in goal for Northampton saving 7-of-9 shots during the game. Keffer is also enjoying an impressive season this year with a total of 59 saves to date.
In the back half of Northampton's 2013 schedule the team is preparing for some big conference matchups. Northampton will travel to Easton for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, Sept. 25, after Press deadlines, followed by a home game against Liberty at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28th.
"It's a tough conference, there are some tough schools in this division," said Belaires.
But with a little hard work and a great deal of passion for the game, Northampton seems poised to meet this challenge head on.
