The Whitehall Township Police Department bargaining unit and the township have wrapped up negotiations for a new contract which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.

The current contract expires Dec. 31. The township board of commissioners will vote on the pact at their next public meeting.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said no details regarding the talks with the police will be made public until the commissioners discuss the matter Monday, Oct. 14. The meeting takes place a week after the monthly workshop session Oct. 7.

The new contract is expected to be a multiyear contract, spanning three years as have previous contracts. It will presumably contain a pay raise, the amount and percentage to be made public when the commissioners vote on the contract.

The contract covers all police, from patrol officers to the ranks of lieutenant and captain. No information was provided on how the pact will affect police officers.

The contract does not include the police chief, whose salary is voted on separately.

The last several police bargaining sessions concluded in a settlement without any issues requiring binding arbitration. The talks were said to be cordial.

The township was represented by Deputy Mayor Jack Meyers and Hozza.
