Coming Events:

Sept. 20: New Student Involvement Fair, high school auxiliary gym, 10 a.m. Parkland High School students will explore a myriad of co-curricular activities that are offered at Parkland. The high school offers more than 65 after-school clubs as well as 23 sports to complement the academic experience of attending school.

Sept. 21: Class of 2014 yard sale, high school auditorium Parking Lot, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

Sept. 21: Parkland Emergency Preparedness Day, St. Luke's West End Medical Center (former Expo, 501 Cetronia Road), 11 a.m.-4 p.m. North Whitehall, South Whitehall and Upper Macungie fire, police, and EMS will join together with equipment and displays, handouts from various vendors and demonstrations to make this a fun and educational event for families. Food, rides and games will be part of the outdoor event.

Sept. 23: Orefield Middle School SADD Burger King Night, 5-8 p.m. at Burger King Route 309. The OMS SADD Club will receive 20 percent of the purchases.

Achievements

The following Parkland High School students were selected as semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program: Seth D. Bartynski, Shira Botzum, Rahul G. Deshpande, Nishad Gothoskar, Hannah Kim, Luke J. Kim, Sung Hwan Park, Jenna Peng, Jyotsna Soundararajan and Maria Vratsanos.

These scholastically talented seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $36 million, offered next spring.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. The privately financed National Merit Scholarship competition is open to all U.S. high school students who meet program participation requirements published by the NMSC.

Winners of scholarships are chosen on the basis of their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.

The Parkland High School Chorale performed the National Anthem prior to the Temple University home opening football game in early September making a wonderful start of the school year experience for the singers.
