LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Emmaus girls tennis remains undefeated

The first few weeks of the season were supposed to be the toughest for Emmaus tennis. With matches against teams like Northampton and Nazareth, battling through the Lehigh Valley Conference figured to be tough right from the start.

That fact makes the 6-0 start that Emmaus is off to that much more impressive, since the Layd Hornets picked up wins over Northampton, the team that beat them in team districts last season, a Nazareth team that was undefeated until running into Emmaus and a solid Freedom team all in the first two weeks of the season.

"The first half of the season is really jam packed with some of the teams that gave us trouble last year, so I was surprised that we came out with such a bang," said coach Kelly Musselman.

"I'm not surprised that we're doing so well because the girls work really hard at practice and we focus on the things that we need to improve on."

Emmaus and Parkland stand as the only undefeated teams in the LVC, with every other team having at least two losses. Besides the Trojans, Musselman believes that the Hornets have made it past two of the toughest teams in the conference in Nazareth and Freedom.

"Nazareth came out with some really good doubles," she said. "Their doubles impressed me and we had a really hard time with their doubles. They had a lot of skill and strategies that worked against us. Freedom had very strong singles. Not that I'm surprised, because they're always good, but they really gave us a run for our money."

Over the past week, Emmaus has beaten Nazareth 4-3, Easton 7-0 and Whitehall 5-2.

Number one singles player Kelly Nguyen started the season with two tough losses, but hasn't dropped a set since, picking up four wins. Nguyen also teamed with number two singles player Cat Garrity to win doubles matches against Nazareth and Easton. Number three singles player Victoria Chan remains undefeated and has dropped just two sets all season.

In doubles, the tandem of Katrina Guido and Elise Van Ormer dropped their first and only match of the season against Nazareth. Doubles was a bit of a concern coming into the season, because of the losses they took through graduation, but the doubles teams are a combined 18-5 on the season.

"We have girls on our team that were able and ready to fill those spots and anxious to get to know a new doubles partner and learn how to mesh with them and I think that as the season goes on, they're complimenting each other and they're working with each other to get better," said Musselman of her doubles competitors.

This week brings three matches, all on the road, for Emmaus.

It starts with Bethlehem Catholic (5-2, 4-2) on Thursday and continues with a non-conference match with Southern Lehigh (6-1) Friday and wraps up with a match against Allen (2-5) next Tuesday. Surprisingly, the regular season is almost halfway, with eight of 14 matches remaining before the LVC Tournament on September 30.
