The Whitehall Lions began their 2013-14 fiscal year July 1. Having been chartered in 1951, the club now celebrates its 62nd year.

Members continue to sponsor the Whitehall Leo Club, which has the distinction of being the oldest continuous Leo club in the world.

The Lions also continue to sponsor the Whitehall Senior Sports Banquet.

The Lions will continue to support the Center for Vision Loss, collecting old eyeglasses and hearing aids, providing eye exams and glasses for those who qualify, providing trophies and scholarship money to high school students and supporting the Whitehall Township Public Library and the Whitehall food bank.

In order to pay for its activities, the Lions are holding fundraisers.

Whitehall residents have already received a ticket in the mail for the 38th annual sweepstakes drawing. Residents are asked to complete and return the ticket before Sept. 16 or just make a donation.

Everyone is invited to join the Lions at Friendly's in Whitehall 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, for dinner. Friendly's will donate a portion of sales to the club.

The restaurant will donate a percentage of the sales to the Whitehall Lions.

Another fundraiser is planned for April 11, 2014 at the American Club Pavilion in Coplay. The headliner for this event will be award winner Tommy Zito. More details will follow.

Over the last five years this event has sold out with only 200 tickets available so don't wait to purchase them once they go on sale.

The club has also announced its officers for the 2013-14 year. They are President Cindy Polzer, First Vice President Judy Ott, Second Vice President Colleen Webster, Third Vice President Teresa Pickar, Secretary Bob Hauck, Treasurer Craig Merkel, Financial Secretary Al Sparrow, Den Scraps/Historian Judy Ott and Past President Larry Pickar.

Speakers are scheduled for the regular monthly meetings. They include Whitehall Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., members of the Whitehall-Coplay School Board and the Lions District governor.

The club meets 6 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month at Fellowship Community.

Recruiting new members is an on going activity. Any man or woman interested in volunteering should check out the Whitehall Lions.
