A 90-minute standoff in Coplay ended peacefully Sunday.
A man in his 20s threatened suicide Sunday while barricaded inside his North Eighth Street home.
Coplay police, along with members of the Lehigh County Emergency Response Team (MERT), responded to a call around noon Sunday involving a man barricaded inside his home on North Eighth Street, threatening suicide, police said. Police from Whitehall and Catasauqua also assisted at the scene.
"He did not want to talk with any of the police officers," Coplay Police Chief Vincent Genovese said.
Although Genovese said the man never spoke with police, officers were able to contact his father, who resides in Florida. The father communicated with his son, ending the standoff, when the man walked out the back door, smoking a cigarette, Genovese said.
No shots were fired during the incident. Police searched the premises and did find weapons inside, according to Genovese.
He said the man, whose identity is being withheld, was transported to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation. Police are continuing to investigate the incident, he said.
Genovese said it does not appear the man was using drugs, though alcohol use is a possibility.
During the incident, police closed North Eighth Street to traffic. Residents were evacuated from homes on both sides of the house in which the man barricaded himself, police said.
