The Coplay swimming pool pumps lasted just long enough this year.

In a report to Coplay Borough Council at its workshop meeting Tuesday, public works Director Dan Pavelko said one of the pool pumps failed before Coplay Community Days Aug. 22-25. The second pump lasted just long enough to get through the annual festival and the end of the pool season.

"The good news is we'll have two fresh pumps next year for start up," he said.

Councilman Charles Sodl asked about the costs for repairs.

Pavelko said he believes both pumps will need new motors at a cost of approximately $1,000 each.

"I ordered the parts for the repair of the pumps themselves, the motors are a different component," he said, adding the other parts cost approximately $1,500.

When the pumps will be fixed depends on what funds remain in the budget, said borough Secretary-Treasurer Sandra Gyecsek.

"I can wait with the motors till next year," Pavelko said.

Councilman Steve Burker, who chairs the parks and recreation committee, said the weather was "not very cooperative" with the pool season this year.

"So that will reflect pretty much in a negative way once our numbers are finalized," he said.

Saying he believes John Milander of Milander's Market was happy with his experience running the pool concession stand, Burker asked Sodl to negotiate with Milander to handle it again next year.

In addition to working on the pool pumps, the public works crew devoted about three weeks in August to preparation and cleanup for Coplay Community Days, Pavelko said during his report.

The crew installed walkway lights at the park, roughed in the public address system, trimmed brush and fixed rough patches on the sidewalks. Cleanup afterward took about three days.

"I want to thank the public works department for helping out at community days," said Council President Lou Bodish.

"It actually was a lot of fun," Pavelko said.

Burker also thanked council and borough employees for supporting the festival.

"It's said that you lead by example," he said. "This present council, our public works department, borough office staff and [police Chief Vincent] Genovese and staff and our mayor, Joe Bundra, did just that."

Burker thanked each councilman by name, along with Bundra, Pavelko, Genovese and borough office staff.

He also thanked the many civic groups, volunteers, Co-chairman John Schreiner and even Mel Procanyn, a well-known Republican in a town of Democrats, for making the event a success.

"Coplay Community Days had nothing to do with whether you were a Democrat or a Republican," Burker said. "Even Mr. Procanyn was sitting selling tickets."
