Arrests made in more than 30 area burglaries
Three men have been charged in connection with more than 30 burglaries or attempted burglaries in Lehigh County and three other counties.
Ralph Alberto Abreu, 21, no known address; Alex Ramos, 23, of 153 W. Court St., Allentown; and Jose Antonio Cortes, 22, of 943 Fifth St., Allentown, have been charged with multiple counts of burglary, criminal attempt at burglary, criminal trespass, criminal conspiracy to commit criminal trespass, criminal mischief, criminal conspiracy to commit criminal mischief, theft, criminal conspiracy to commit theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy to receive stolen property, according to the Lehigh County district attorney's office.
The burglaries occurred at commercial businesses between May 29 and July 19 in Lehigh, Berks, Northampton and Montgomery counties, but the majority of the burglaries took place in Lehigh County.
Businesses burglarized in Whitehall Township include China King, 5503 MacArthur Road; Angel's Pizza, 5511 MacArthur Road; Geiger's Market, 3001 S. Second St.; and Hess Station and 2161 S. First Ave.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Police and the Whitehall Township Police Department, the defendants removed registers, cigarette cartons and packs, change jars, cash and coins from the businesses.
The total amount of items stolen was $21,416, and the amount of damage totaled $33,721.
All of the burglaries were committed between 8:30 p.m. and 8:30 a.m., the affidavit says.
State police and Whitehall Townshp police obtained surveillance videos from the burglary scenes. The clothing the suspects wore and that was observed on the videos was consistent with reports of witnesses, according to the affidavit.
Video at one of the burglary locations showed the getaway vehicle arriving at and leaving the location.
At 8 a.m. July 19 a burglary occurred at Sam's Pizza, 5041 Route 873 in North Whitehall Township, the affidavit says. The perpetrators fled in a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle that had been seen on video in a previous burglary.
The three defendants are charged, the affidavit says.
Abreu, Cortes and Ramos were to be arraigned in Lehigh County Central Booking Aug. 28.
