The high number of triaxle trucks lumbering onto MacArthur Road daily from out-of state continues.

The trucks are on their way to an abandoned quarry owned by Coplay Aggregates on West Coplay Road, off Chestnut Street in Whitehall.

With as many as 80 trucks daily, the traffic is beginning to take its toll on township roads, according to Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr.

The tarp-covered trucks are hauling material dredged from New Jersey waterways following Hurricane Sandy last year.

The township earlier was told the truck traffic was temporary because of a break in equipment at a site in New Jersey where the material was being deposited. However, traffic has not lessened in recent months.

Because the quarry property is owned privately and designated as a reclamation site by the state, there is little the township can do to resolve the matter.

However, the police department and its weight team is regularly conducting inspections to determine whether trucks are overweight and whether the equipment meets applicable safety laws.

"One thing we are looking at is putting in tapping fees," Hozza said. The implementation of such a fee is presently being researched and reviewed.

Coplay Aggregates has said it wants to cooperate with the township on issues it may have with the reclamation project, including keeping the streets clear of dust and dirt.
