Space Shuttle Blake traveling to LVIA air show

Parkland's Space Shuttle Blake will be on display at the Lehigh Valley Air Show Aug. 24 and 25.

At the July 16 board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Rod Troutman reported officials from the airport authority requested to have the shuttle join numerous other flight craft at the show, which is expected to attract large crowds of visitors.

Board member Rob Cohen expressed concerns about displaying Blake, which is no longer the marvel it once was.

"Will this showcase our district?" Cohen asked. "It's a somewhat faded technology."

Troutman responded to the concern.

"This is a piece of history," Troutman said. "The space shuttle program no longer exists, so Blake can't be updated."

Although it might now be more of a museum piece, the Blake is still something Parkland can be proud of, Troutman explained.

Commander Bob Boehmer will be on site with the Blake to supply information and answer questions at the event.

A retired Parkland teacher, Boehmer provided the incentive and organizational skills to develop the Blake.

The shuttle was used by children as a laboratory to learn about space and technology.
