Coplay Column

With Coplay Community Days approaching at the end of the month, the borough's public works department has now finished painting the interior roof in white, the first such painting to be completed in years.

The beige brick columns look as new now as when they were first erected in the early 1970s.

Although a bronze plaque was mounted on one of the brick columns at the front of the parkway pavilion, most do not know that the pavilion was a project created by the then Koplay Keystone Kops, a group of men who remained together after the 1969 borough centennial celebration.

If you are at the parkway pavilion or swimming pool for a picnic, you will notice a permanent bandstand is being built, which will give the public a better view of the entertainment at the upcoming community days. Also, if you are at other locations in the parkway for the three-day festival, there are speakers being installed so the music can be heard all across the grounds.

A third project under way by the public works personnel is the installation of three parkway light standards, further illuminating the grounds just north of the pavilion and near the bathhouse where some stands are erected for the festival. The poles were provided by the American Club of Coplay. They are excess poles from when they installed exterior lighting on their grounds, road and parking lot.

Coplay Saengerbund outdoor dances at its grove pavilion are striking the right chord with crowds attending the dances and music. The dances have rebounded after they were shut down for much of last year's spring and summer until the issue of noise levels from the bands playing was addressed. This Friday the popular band Toga Band, with their white robes and Greek head bands, will perform on the bandstand.

The chain link fence, which was just erected on the grounds at the Coplay Sports Inc. complex between Sixth and Seventh streets, has given the grounds a fresh look.

The section of new fencing is west of the field house and part of a continuing project for new fencing to replace fencing from decades past. Recent fencing has been installed at other sections of the Coplay Sports complex and the Coplay American Legion ball field, Sammy Balliet Stadium.
