Girls get to Sunday; boys go 2-1

A week after facing tough competition in the grueling heat at the Stellar Catch A Rising Star tournament, the Emmaus boys and girls basketball teams were back at Cedar Beach Park for the second consecutive showcase event.

The Green Hornets girl team improved from a Saturday exit at Stellar by playing deep into Sunday at Sportsfest.

"In the summer you have players that are on vacation and other sports commitments," said Emmaus girls head coach Billy Dunn. "This is the first time we had most of our players, and that helps a lot. This is just a great atmosphere for the girls, and we're still building pieces to have a program that can compete in the LVC."

Emmaus opened on Thursday with a win over Quakertown, 45-17. With the Green Hornets bringing back four starters from last year's squad, it was a freshman that proved to be a valuable asset to the team. Kiyae White led the way with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Dunn spoke highly of his rising youngster.

"Kiyae White hasn't even stepped into the high school yet and she's starting for us," noted Dunn. "We have some new faces stepping up and it's just fun to see."

Dunn had a lot of praise for his team's effort after the opening round win.

"This was one of the best games we've played in a while," added Dunn. "We told our girls that defense creates offense, and our defense was outstanding."

The Green Hornets lost their next game on Saturday to Dunmore.

The girls bounced back a couple of hours later to defeat Reading, 35-16. Reading beat Stellar champion Northwestern in an earlier Sportsfest game.

The Green Hornets then won two games in a row in a matter of two hours on Saturday night, winning by forfeit over Northern Light Academy and then beating Easton, 33-31.

On Sunday morning, the run ended with a 25-15 loss to Parkland.

The Emmaus boys lost their opening-round game of a three-game pool play to Springfield Delco 36-32 on Friday night.

The Green Hornets bounced back the next morning to take down AFBE, an international team, 47-39 and beat Lehigton in the next round. Emmaus did not advance to the 16-team, single elimination championship round.

The Emmaus boys junior varsity team was crowned tournament champions for the second weekend in a row. A week after winning the Stellar JV Tournament, Emmaus defeated Central Catholic 45-38 in the Sportsfest JV tournament behind 14 points from David Kachelries and 12 by Joey Polczynski.
