Lower Mac heads into postseason

In two games this season, Salisbury downed Lower Macungie by a combined score of 20-2. The good news is that some believe the third time is the charm and Lower Mac gets a third shot at Salisbury in the first round of the Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 9-9 record, but were seeded behind Fullerton (9-9) by because Fullerton also beat Lower Macungie twice in the regular season.

As the season came down to its final day, the Mustangs found themselves in the unusual position of rooting for rival Emmaus as they played a pair of games against Fullerton. Emmaus won the first game and had they won the second game, Fullerton would have been seeded sixth and drawn Salisbury for the first round, while Lower Macungie would be playing Northern Valley in the eight-team double-elimnation LVL tournament.

Lower Macungie dropped a 6-5 game to Coplay (7-11) last week. Eric Woods was 2-for-3 in the game, but the Mustangs stranded 11 men on base.

Salisbury led the LVL standings for part of the season, but finished in third place with a 13-5 record, two games behind regular season champion North Parkland. Southern Lehigh finished second at 14-4.

While Salisbury is considered one of the top teams in the league, the Falcons went 0-4 against North Parkland and Southern Lehigh, losing their two games with North Parkland by a combined score of 25-1.

They went 12-0 against the bottom six teams in the league. Their only win against a team with a winning record came in mid-June when they downed Northern Valley (11-7) by a 4-1 score.

After a 10-0 loss to Salisbury this season, first-year Lower Macungie manager Mark Sterkenberg noted that his team needs to click on all cylinders to win.

"We need our guys to hit, because we can't get by with just our pitching," he said. "We also can't win with just our offense. We need to be good offensively, defensively and on the mound if we're going to beat these better teams."

While Sterkenberg admits that Salisbury is a good team, he also believes that his team is good enough that it shouldn't have lost to the Falcons by two lopsided scores in the regular season.

"I didn't expect them to beat us that badly," said Sterkenberg. "I know they're a good team, but we have some talent on this team and we should be able to give them a good game, better than what we showed."

The postseason schedule begins Wednesday when Lower Macungie plays at Salisbury High School with the game scheduled for 5:45.
