Hornets improve to 5-2 with win over Warren

The Emmaus boys soccer team ended last season as District 11 runners-up and Lehigh Valley Conference champions.

Those feats were accomplished in large part thanks to a core group of seniors. AJ Bishop, Adam Kita, and Ben Roda combined for 29 goals, and Kevin Fine was in goal for 14 shutouts and 53 career wins.

Head coach John Cari is sad to see that class go, but knows he still has talent waiting to blossom. Last year around this time, that Emmaus team won the Lehigh Valley Summer Soccer league title on its way to an 18-4-1 record during the fall season. If all goes according to plan, all the Green Hornets have to do is win the summer league, and they will have a successful fall season.

Last Wednesday night at Lehigh University's soccer fields, Emmaus continued its winning ways with a 6-0 thrashing of Warren United to improve to 5-2 with three games left. The playoffs begin on July 17th.

Emmaus did all of its scoring in the first half against Warren United (4-4).

Kevin Waterman and Patrick Russel each tallied two goals, and Phil Housekenct and Greg Lind contributed a goal apiece. Ryan Hassenmeier assisted on the first Emmaus goal when he found Russel with a cross from outside the eighteen.

The Green Hornets dominated possession throughout the game, controlling the tempo and rhythm. It showed in the amount of work each goalkeeper was forced to do.

Emmaus had 12 first-half shots, and its defense held firm, allowing Ethan Long to not have to make any saves. Warren United only found one shot, which was not on goal.

These Green Hornets have a lot of scoring and defense to make up for the graduation of the seniors from a year ago, but the summer is proving that they are more than capable of achieving that feat.
