To the Editor:
Recently, members of Neighborhood Voter Network attended a talk by Dr. Peg Luksik on the issue of the Common Core Curriculum.
Dr. Luksik, an amazing speaker with impressive education credentials, used only official government documents to make her case against this federally-mandated curriculum from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 and beyond.
We believe her serious concerns should be examined carefully.
Common Core will, for example, give the federal government control over local curriculum content and standards; set up a massive federal tracking system of every student and teacher by name; reduce math requirements for graduation well below current levels; affect private, religious, and home-schools seeking accreditation or offering state-sponsored diplomas, and; promote a national "green" agenda on the so-called "science" behind climate change.
Common Core is scheduled to take effect in September.
The only way for local school boards, teachers and parents to retain control over curriculum content and standards is through state legislation.
We strongly encourage concerned citizens to call or email Gov. Tom Corbett and their state legislators soon, urging them to repeal the Common Core standards or delay their implementation until further study.
That's the only hope of avoiding a federal takeover of our school curriculum.
