Lehigh Valley goes 1-2
Weather and time worked against Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team as it was eliminated from the tournament last week after losses to Tri-Cape and Burlington County.
Lehigh Valley's first game last Wednesday resulted in an early-morning 5-2 loss to Tri-Cape, but Lehigh Valley came back with a 4-0 victory over Olympic Colonial in the afternoon.
Northern Lehigh's Amber Thomas and Pen Argyl's Emily Smull pitched the shutout for Lehigh Valley.
Lehigh Valley's win against Olympic Colonial provided a needed boost for the local team, which had to wait approximately five hours before its final game of the day.
About to face an undefeated Burlington County team, the game was further delayed by thunder and lightning.
In addition, Lehigh Valley was without one of its best pitchers, Emmaus's Olivia Marcks.
"I think it definitely hurt us," said Catasauqua catcher, Janae Matos, complimenting Marcks.
Marcks competed in the Team New Jersey tournament, a huge college showcase.
"It was hard, picking which [tournament] to go to," Marcks said.
At FDR Park, Burlington County took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and scored four more runs in the third. Lehigh Valley scored two runs in the fifth inning, but the game was eventually called on account of darkness.
"It was disappointing because we actually scored two runs right before they called it," said Pleasant Valley's Jordan Meckes.
Salisbury's Meghan Williams and Northampton's Hannah Peters had doubles in Lehigh Valley's final loss of the tournament.
Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team was coached by John Eyer, Scott Bortz, and Blake Morgan.
