Lehigh officials discuss building
The Lehigh Township supervisors discussed a proposed public works building at their June 25 meeting.
A workshop had been held on the matter. Township Manager Alice Rehrig received three designs and said she finds the third design to be the least desirable because the office would be located next to the truck entrance.
Frank Zamadics, roadmaster, likes the first one that is similar to the one in Maxatawny Township. It will be 28,000 square feet and large enough to store equipment inside. The office would be 2,980 to 3,075 square feet.
Supervisor Dell Grove asked if it is necessary to add a women's locker room. It is a requirement even with no women employees.
The 100-by-280-foot building will utilize the available space.
Zamadics said he has 15 trucks. He said trucks rust faster where there is no heat.
The estimated cost for the new building is $2 million.
Resident Leo Livengood said he has radiant heat in his building and it is "the way to go." The building has to be clear span.
Posts should not be set in the ground but rather on a concrete support. A pole building can also be set on top of an eight-foot block wall, said Livengood. He also said sprayed urethane is good insulation on a cement wall.
Supervisor Keith Hantz asked where they can get some ballpark numbers and Zamadics said he will make some calls.
In other business, the supervisors discussed the position of public works crew leader. Hantz said the person should have at least five years experience with the township.
Supervisor Sandy Hopkins asked why it would be a union position.
Zamadics said the person would still be working under him and would be doing normal road work, not administrative work.
Solicitor David Backenstoe will review the issue.
Also at the meeting:
· The final report to FEMA has been turned in for Willow Road work. It is for $11,000.
· RCN submitted a proposal for providing Internet service for $112 per month. It would require a three-year commitment.
Fire chief Rick Hildebrand said the fire company bundles its phone and Internet, but Rehrig said RCN does not want to touch the phone system.
· Supervisor Cindy Miller said a Northampton County company has asked about working on the township website. She said she is also aware of a possible grant which would pay 50 percent of the cost up to $10,000 a year. She said $7,500 had been approved for a website in this year's budget.
The company will provide 50 pages of materials and PDFs will not count as a page. They will also train township personnel during a 20- to 30-minute session. There is also a maintenance plan. Eventually email could be included.
· Following a favorable report from the police department, Lehigh Township supervisors approved three personal shooting ranges at their meeting June 25 for Todd Miller, Thomas Meyers and George Dettmer.
