The Northampton Farmers Market will make its debut Tuesday, July 9.
Victor Rodite, borough planner and consultant who led the charge for a farmers market, informed borough lawmakers Thursday the market will open on a vacant lot in the town's commercial center.
"We chose the uptown location to bring more foot traffic into our Uptown Business District and to promote healthy food grown locally," said Rodite. "We chose a quality local farm, Twin Maple Farm, with Garry Hunsicker as our lead farmer for 2013."
Hunsicker will sell summer squash, zuchini, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, onions, string beans, eggplant and sweet corn at the farmers market. Bakery items and organically grown crops could also be part of the market.
Rodite said the farmer's market will be housed between the Roxy Theatre and other commercial businesses, next to Zion Lutheran Church. It will be open Tuesdays, 3-7 p.m.
Along with vegetables, locally grown fruit and flowers will be available.
Farmers market proponent Carol Simcoe said a different business could be featured every two weeks. She said sales of homemade items may start off slow, but her projections indicate steady growth.
Councilman Tony Pristash said his "biggest fear" is the lack of vendors at the start but, as the discussion continued, he made it clear he strongly supports the farmers market.
The site will also be made into a minipark as funding becomes available.
Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. described it as "a rallying point."
