Parkland's festival of the arts is a feast for all senses

The 10th annual Parkland Festival of the Arts took place May 16-18 at the high school.

Two free events, the high school art show and the Family Consumer Science "Art of Living" exhibit, which features free food tastings and fashion displays made by Family and Consumer Science students, kicked started the weekend's festivities.

A third free event, the PHS Chorus Concert, topped off the evening at 7 p.m.

On Friday evening, "Parkland's Got Talent," a community-wide talent show was judged by Parkland graduates Margaret Newcomb ('06), a former "Best Actress" Freddy winner and opera singer who has performed in Germany and New York City and Dan Becker ('05), a puppeteer in the national tour of John Tartaglia's "ImaginOcean."

That same night, the Battle of the Bands took place in the cafeteria with student bands competing for their peers' vote for best high school band.

Saturday morning, the annual "Artists on the Quad" event began 10 a.m.

This included kiosks spread out across the high school lawn, with art, food, entertainment and local crafters selling their wares

The day was filled with musical entertainment under the festival tent on the lawn.

The auditorium hosted local dance schools for recitals throughout the day.

Festival goers found themselves surrounded by delicious foods provided by various middle school and high school clubs.

There was live music and dance performances outside all day and performances inside the rotunda where passersby entered to enjoy kindergarten through grade 12 artwork displays throughout the hallways of the building.

A character parade performed by Performing Arts Club students marched around the front of the high school, and throughout the day there were opportunities to have photos taken with costumed characters.

An art and live planter basket raffle helped raise funds toward scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in the arts.
