Joseph "Joey" Stumer II, of Moore Township, recently received his "15 minutes of fame" when a clip from his red belt testing in karate showed up on the television show America's Funniest Home Videos.
In the clip, Stumer, 16, was performing his kata, a choreographed pattern of movements meant to show one's ability, when he accidentally hit himself in the head.
The accident happened Feb. 9. Stumer's father was recording the kata for review later. While the family originally just watched the video among themselves, Joey's father later decided to submit the clip to AFV.
After a few weeks the Stumers were emailed and then called by the producers of the show.
They were told the producers wanted to use the clip but they did not know if it would show up in the current season or if it would have to wait until next year.
Eventually, it was decided the clip would be aired May 12.
The family was asked by AFV executives not to post the video online anywhere, so instead they informed everyone through Facebook that Joey would be on television.
Members of the Stumer family did not get to fly out to the airing of the show, but they did watch the episode with their neighbors and other relatives.
His mother, Jenn, said Joey found humor in the accident. He was not injured and, his mother said, he continued performing his kata and received his red belt that day.
She also noted that Joey has been a big fan of AFV since he was a kid, so he was very excited to be on the show.
For being on the show, Joey received a personalized note and an AFV T-shirt in the mail.
