Lehigh Twp. to create police eligibility list

Police Chief Scott Fogel told Lehigh Township supervisors at its May 28 meeting that it would be an opportune time to begin an eligibility list for potential hires for the police department.

A grant is available to pay for 75 percent of a new officer's wages for three years.

Fogel said a larger force will be needed in the next few years to police and handle the Walmart and related retail theft and traffic.

The supervisors approved preparing the list.

Also at the meeting:

· A problem with rosters and insurance forms not always being turned on time was discussed. The paperwork is required before youth sports teams play on the township fields and must be submitted to the township office before any practice or game is played.

Dennis Hock, chair of the recreation board, said 35 percent of a team's players have to be township residents.

Any organized team has to have the roster and insurance in order to play on the fields, said Snover.

Solicitor David Backenstoe said a list of players must be approved by the recreation board and given to the township manager.

Snover also said a team that does not comply will be able to finish a game but the team will be assessed a "meaningful fine."

· A developer is interested in the former Cherryville Post Office, located at the corner of Route 248 and Blue Mountain Drive, next to Turkey Hill, Backenstoe said.

Snover said the post office and general store were used commercially for years.

Accommodating the developer would mean expanding the present zoning to include the property in the commercial corridor. The question will be turned over to the planning commission.
