Council permits School district to use swimming pool lot

Northampton Borough Council will permit the Northampton Area School District to allow its personnel to use the borough's swimming pool lot for parking.

Once the pool shuts down for the summer, however, the larger neighboring Memorial Community Center lot is off limits.

Council at Thursday's meeting acted on a report from borough Manager Gene Zarayko and approved the NASD's parking request, made because of construction of a new middle school.

"We received a letter from Joseph Kovalchik, superintendent of schools, requesting permission to utilize the borough's swimming pool parking lot during construction," Zarayko said. "The school year will start Aug. 26, 2013 and end June 3, 2014. The use of this parking area would not interfere with the swimming pool because it closes Aug. 12. However, they need to notify the staff that they cannot utilize the community center parking lot."

In other business, it was announced council will keep its tradition of cutting its meeting schedule to once a month in July and August.

Council will continue to meet the third Thursday of the month, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Meetings the first Thursday of the month will resume in September.

Also, permission was granted to Hanover Township to use the borough's portable band shell June 27.

"In the past we waived all fees because they send their own truck to pick up and return this unit," Zarayko said.

Councilman Robert Coleman, administration and finance committee member, said the generator for the community center has been installed and is operational.

Coleman said the generator, purchased partly with casino funding, is a tremendous asset because the community center would serve as a shelter in the event of a disaster.
