Referring to a serious accident near his home on Route 29, Upper Milford Township supervisor Robert Sentner, at last week's meeting, urged the board to "be proactive" in addressing safety concerns on that stretch of road.

He said that accident, which happened about 1:30 a.m., was the 11th serious accident on Route 29 in the township in recent months. He called it "the most dangerous stretch of road in the township." He has a meeting set with the state police and staff from the office of Senator Robert Mensch, R-24th, to discuss what can be done to address his concerns. Route 29 is a state road.

In other safety issues, Sentner asked Emergency Management Coordinator William Stahler to set another meeting to continue planning an updated emergency management plan. Stahler said his understanding is that township staff has almost completed an updated plan.

Supervisor George DeVault said he recently attended a workshop on volunteer fire departments sponsored by Mensch. He reported Mensch attributed volunteers' decisions to leave fire departments to lack of leadership and too much time required for fundraising.

DeVault said townships have to do more to lighten the fundraising burden on volunteer firefighters.

In a related matter, the board approved withdrawing $110,000 from Citizen Fire Company #1's account to make a down payment on a new pumper truck to replace a 1983 pumper.

Supervisors also awarded bids for road work– one to A-1 Traffic Control Products, of Douglassville, for line painting in the amount of $31,864; and two to Asphalt Maintenance Solutions, of Center Valley, $52,165 for bituminous seal coat and $240,646 for ultra-thin friction course.

Both companies were the low bidders, township Manager Daniel DeLong said, and both have a good track record of prior work for the township.

Board members also agreed it is worth trying to repair a 1970 grader, rather than sell it as is. In a memo, Public Works Coordinator Steve Ackerman said the estimated cost of repairing it is about $12,000, but "this way we know what we have."

"We need a grader," Sentner said.

In other business, Stahler informed the board he has appointed Shawn Schwoyer deputy emergency coordinator. Schwoyer takes over for Ira Shade, who is becoming chief of Citizens Fire Co. #1.

Supervisors canceled their July 4 meeting because of the holiday and will hold just one meeting that month, July 18.

The board met in executive session for 45 minutes to discuss personnel, and after the session, agreed to appoint Cody Schmeltzle as a part-time seasonal employee.

Supervisors agreed to sell a 1969 air compressor to the highest bidder for $650. "I don't think we expected to get that much," DeLong said.

The board adopted an ordinance outlining regulations for use of the township's yard waste drop-off site. The regulations are already posted, but having an ordinance in place will make them enforceable, Solicitor Marc Fisher said.
