The Borough of Northampton will seek the grant for construction of handicap curbs and ramps on Laubach Avenue.
At the May 23 borough council meeting, Borough Manager Gene Zarayko told borough lawmakers of the possibility the borough could be in line for the CDBG grant administered by Northampton County. CDBG funding is a federal program through which funds are allocated by the state. Until in recent years, the borough had to apply to the state for the grant, but now Northampton County approves applications.
The handicap curb construction for Laubach Avenue would tie in with the proposed resurfacing of Laubach Avenue, a principal road in the borough. In order that Laubach Avenue does not incur damage during the middle school construction project, the borough earlier advised the Northampton Area School District to route construction trucks onto other roads, such as Horwith Drive.
In other business, Zarayko said electronics – meaning anything that requires wires to be used or charged – can no longer be placed in landfills and the borough can no longer afford to collect these items for free It will now cost $30 to dispose of items such as TV sets and computers.
