Marjorie M. Nemes, 91, of Wyndmoor, died May 22, 2013 in her home. Born in Bethlehem, she was a daughter of the late Evan and Ilona A. John.
She was a 1939 graduate of Liberty HS. She received a diploma in nursing from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, bachelor's degrees from Lebanon Valley College and Lehigh University and a Ph.D. in Biology from Lehigh.
She was at the Rockefeller Institute and taught at the Women's Medical College, Philadelphia. She was a bio-medical consultant to hospitals and nursing homes. She was a supervisor and research scientist for Merck and Company. Upon retiring from Merck, she counseled troubled youth at Northwestern Hospital, now N.W. Institute of Psychiatry. She made bi-annual trips to the Amazon and Peruvian rainforests to collect plants for medicinal purposes and to study pre-historic birds.
She was a member of the Asa Packer and Tower Societies, Lehigh University.
She is survived by four cousins, Robert J. and Stephen Nemes, Marion Smeltzer and Gertrude Austin.
