Alvin Newton Bugbee Jr.
Alvin Newton Bugbee Jr., 90, of Catasauqua, died May 19, 2013. He was the husband of Monica (Hefele) Bugbee for 63 years.
Born in Trenton, N.J., he was a son of the late Alvin Newton Bugbee and Helen Horn of Catasauqua.
He was a Catasauqua High School graduate. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University. He was a graduate of Infantry Officer's Candidate School.
He was a second lieutenant in the 70th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, serving as a weapons platoon leader and later as a battalion motor officer. He fought in the battles of Ardennes-Alsace, Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the ETO ribbon with three battle stars, the European Theater Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, the Victory Medal, and the French Cross of Lorraine. He transferred later to the Army Corps of Engineers Reserves.
He worked in engineering and heavy construction, for A. Newton Bugbee Inc., Newton Constructors and Rees Weaver Construction.
He was a member of the Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion Post 115, and the 70th Division Association. He was on the board and was a past president of the Lehigh County Historical Society, active with the restoration of the Troxell Steckel House and Barn, Trout Hall and the George Taylor Home. He was a member or chairman of the board of directors of Lehigh Valley Contractors Association, Laborers Health and Welfare Board, the Catasauqua Chamber of Commerce, Lehigh University Class of 44, and the Catasauqua Bicentennial Committee.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandson: Barbara and her husband Thomas Kauffman of Medina, Ohio, and their children Thomas, Elizabeth, and Jacqueline; Victoria and her husband George Warren of Hastings On Hudson, N.Y., and their children Georgia, Dylan, and Tessa; Newton and his wife Kathleen (Fisher) of Wilmington, Del., and their daughters Megan and Laura; Thomas of Catasauqua and his children Olivia, Alex, and Monica; James and his wife Connie (Woodring) of Walnutport and their sons, Eric and Michael, and Erica's son Collin; and Peter and his wife Susan Lozada of Coplay and their daughter Teofila.
Calling hours are 7 to 8:30 p.m. May 23 and from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service, May 24, all at Brubaker Funeral Home Inc., 234 Walnut St., Catasauqua, 18032.
