Northampton Borough Council granted final approval to Windward Pass Holdings LLC to renovate the old, blighted Tama building at 18th and Main streets.
Said to be a major factor in restoring Main Street to its former splendor, borough officials are supportive of plans which include converting the building into 23 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The exterior of the formal apparel manufacturing plant is also in line for a makeover and the facade is to get a new, fresh look as well.
The owner/developer, Daniel Donnelly of New Jersey, told The Press work should begin very soon and will take several months to complete. Donnelly was uncertain whether the apartments would be ready for occupancy by the end of the year.
Having purchased the Brian Kroope tract last month, borough officials are optimistic about the future of the borough's uptown business district. Officials see the Tama project as another key to revitalizing the borough's commercial health. A coffee shop, restaurants and other small businesses, anchored by the Roxy Theatre, have been successful along Main Street.
