LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls fall to EHS

It's not the end of the world, but...

The softball season did not end Monday for the Northampton softball team, but it must have felt like it did.

After jumping in front 2-0 after one inning, the Konkrete Kids seeded No. 1 in the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs let one get away as Emmaus rallied for a 6-2 win in 10 innings.

Played at Allentown's Patriot's Park, the Konkrete Kids fell to 19-2 overall, but still have the District 11 playoffs to look forward to.

Tori Gollie's two-run double gave coach Sally Whittaker-Kahan's squad a 2-0 lead and all-LVC pitcher Marly Laubach, who shut out Emmaus 2-0 on a one-hitter earlier in the season, held the Hornets scoreless through four innings until they pushed across one run in the fifth.

Then in the sixth with one out and Lizzie Natiello on second, the Hornets tied it when Natiello came around on a throwing error as the second out was made on a grounder.

Northampton, which was once ranked No. 4 in the state, had a chance to win in the eighth but Gollie was out at home when she tried to score on a passed ball. Catcher Natiello ran the ball down and threw to pitcher Olivia Marcks for the tag out at home.

Emmaus broke through for the win in the 10th with Anna Snyder starting on second base because of the tiebreaker rule. Marcks and Rachel Brown got bunt singles to load the bases and Natiello singled them home. Before the inning ended Cassidy Sullivan added another two-run single.

Losing pitcher Laubach wound up with 13 strikeouts, but surrendered 10 hits five in the 10th inning. Winning pitcher Marcks surrendered six hits only one after the fifth inning.

Emmaus, the fourth seed in LVC play, faces No. 2 seed Bethlehem Catholic Thursday night at 5 p.m. at Patriot's Park. Becahi, which beat Freedom 3-2 Monday in the other semifinal, is seeking its third-straight LVC title.

Meanwhile, Northampton, which was 13-1 in the LVC, must wait for the District 11 playoffs next week.
