Alison Weichel
graduates
Alison Weichel, of Northampton, earned a bachelor's degree in English education summa cum laude from West Chester University. She was also named to the West Chest University College of Arts and Science dean's list for the fall 2012 semester.
Weichel, who has a Level 1 certification to teach grades 7-12, is currently working as a long-term 11th-grade tutor in the Downingtown Area School District.

DeMelfy
graduates
Michael J. DeMelfy of Whitehall graduated from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia May 11 with dual degrees in economics and international relations.
DeMelfy was also named to the dean's list for the fall 2012 semester at St Joseph's University.
He is the son of John M. and Melanie DeMelfy of Whitehall and a 2009 graduate of Whitehall High School.

Foley volunteers for Alternative Spring Break
Wilkes University Student Ian Foley of Whitehall was among more than 60 Wilkes University students, faculty and staff who participated in the annual Alternative Spring Break March 2-9.
Students participating in the program spend their spring break performing community service to help people in this country and around the world. Destinations for Wilkes' 2013 Alternative Spring Break were Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Missouri and New Orleans.
Foley, a junior at the university majoring in political science and communication studies, volunteered in Costa Rica. He is the son of Tom and Karen Foley.

to dean's list
Shelby Clark was named to the dean's list for the fall 2012 semester at Shippensburg University.

Local students become resident assistants
Edward Cadman and Vanessa Hernandez, both of Whitehall, were recently named resident assistants at Alvernia University for the 2012-13 academic year.
Cadman is an accounting major and a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School. Hernandez, majoring in occupational therapy, is a graduate of Whitehall High School
Resident assistants are upper-class students who live in Alvernia's residence halls. They are expected to create residential environments that enhance student academic progress and success, to know and explain university policies and to be available to students and encourage student responsibility and accountability.

Unangst named to dean's list
Kiersten Unangst of Whitehall was named to the fall 2012 dean's list at Hofstra University.
A math major, she is a member of the Hofstra University Dance Team, winning national honors in January in Florida.
A 2012 graduate of Whitehall High School, she is the daughter of Darcy Unangst.

Ashley Marie Hertzog, of Catasauqua, received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry with a minor in mathematics from Alvernia University during the university's graduation ceremonies held May 11 at the main campus.

Local students inducted into society
Jessica Fisher and Christina Muthard of Coplay; Brittany Glen, Shannon Helm, Rebecca Kistler and Brittany More of Northampton; and Eric Flyte and Anthony Cortazzo of Bath were recently inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni.
The society has chapters on more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.
Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors.

Muthard receives award
Christina Muthard of Coplay, a junior psychology major at Lycoming College, received a Haberberger Fellowship during the college's annual honors convocation April 13.
The Haberberger Fellowship is given to a high achieving junior selected to submit a scholar paper. The fellowship is named after Arthur A. Haberberger, a 1959 Lycoming alumnus and chairman emeritus of the college's board of trustees.
Haberberger, of Reading, is a self-employed investor and business consultant. He was a founding director of American Bank, Allentown, and was formerly a director of Educators Mutual Life Insurance Company, Lancaster; The Vaughn Group, Cincinnati, Ohio.; and the Arbee Group, Reading.

COLLEGE
Area students named to
dean's list
Alanna Cimerol, of Whitehall, and Christina Muthard, of Coplay, were recently named to the Lycoming College dean's list for the spring 2013 semester.
Cimerol is a junior majoring in accounting and Muthard is a senior majoring in psychology.
Students are named to the dean's list if they complete at least 12 semester hours and earn a minimum GPA of 3.50 for the semester.
LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE
Whitehall resident honored
Megan L. Berner of Whitehall was recognized Feb. 21 during the Celebration of Student Success reception held at Lebanon Valley College.
A total of 185 students honored for their student achievements.
Berner is a freshman actuarial science major.
CENTRAL PENN COLLEGE
Lahr named to dean's list
Timothy Lahr, of Northampton, has been named to the Central Penn College dean's list for the winter 2013 term.
Lahr is majoring in criminal justice administration.
To qualify for dean's list, a student must carry six or more credits and earn a GPA of 3.5 or better for the term.
SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY
Catasauqua
students receive scholarships
Students from Catasauqua and North Catasauqua recently received scholarships from Shippensburg University.
Joshua Ritter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ritter, received the Shippensburg University Foundation Scholarship and the Ralphine and Gary Gentzler Scholarship.
Ritter is a 2012 graduate of Catasauqua High School and is a freshman at Shippensburg majoring in middle level education.
Kayla Mullin, the daughter of Todd and Kristine Mullin of North Catasauqua, received the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors' Scholarship.
Mullin will graduate in June from Catasauqua High School.

The following area students were recognized at Millersville University's honors and awards convocation May 4.
Allison N. Breiner, of Northampton, received the Beatrice U. Datesman Scholarship, Class of 1940 Scholarship and Student of Academic Distinction.
Sarah E. Fink, of Bath received the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award.
Amber M. Hartzell, of Whitehall, received the Russell C. Hughes English Scholarship.
More than 750 students were recognized at this convocation for their academic accomplishments including impressive grade point averages, departmental awards for excellence in an academic major, community involvement and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference scholar athletes.
