Eagle Scout project dedicated Saturday
Life Scout Andrew Shaffer wanted to work on and complete an Eagle Scout project to honor those who have served their communities and country.
On Saturday, his project – a flagpole memorial – was officially unveiled during a ceremony at East Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department. Assisting with the dedication were Eagle Scouts Michael Kukor and Alexander Shaffer and Life Scout Tucker Allison.
Andrew worked on securing the funding and installing the flagpole and brick memorial.
The project, which took a total of 300 hours to complete, was the result of Andrew wanting to ensure a public area was reserved to honor firefighters and first responders.
"I thought it would be a good thing for the community," Andrew said. "This is a very deserving group of people."
The most challenging part was securing the proper paperwork. After he received the permit, everything went smoothly, he said.
"I met a lot of great people," Andrew said. "They really do deserve this."
Andrew's father, Russell Shaffer, who serves as Scoutmaster of Troop 43, echoed his son's sentiments.
"We're here to honor the firefighters of East Allen Township," he said in front of a crowd of family, friends, firefighters and first responders and community members. "I think you guys in East Allen Township are blessed to have a group that is dedicated."
Russell said the firefighters assisted Andrew and the Scout group with the project.
Chief Barry Frantz said the project, which was completed this spring, will serve as a reminder to the community well into the next century of the sacrifices and selflessness of those who serve as firefighters.
Frantz added he and the fire department are extremely pleased with the flagpole project and Andrew's commitment.
"Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer, you should be very proud of your son," Frantz said. "He has a bright future ahead of him."
At the conclusion of the flagpole dedication ceremony, various awards were presented to members of the East Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire company also officially dedicated a 2014 Pierce Arrow 95-foot Mid-Ship Tower truck.
The truck is dedicated in memory of past President and Deputy Chief Scott Knauss and Fire Commissioner Jerry Odenwelder, whose names are affixed to the side of the truck.
