Borough to consider weight limits on bridge over creek

Although far smaller than the George Washington Bridge in New York City and even the Coplay-Northampton Bridge, the small span on Howertown Road is a concern for Northampton Borouch Council and the administration.

Most motorists who cross the bridge – which has no name – most likely don't even realize they are crossing a bridge.

However, a recent surge of triaxle trucks rumbling across Howertown Road and onto the bridge has led to complaints from residents about noise and dirt from the trucks, some of which pass by in the middle of the night.

The triaxle trucks, loaded with fill and materials headed to a privately owned quarry in Allen Township, are generally from outside the state.

The small bridge over Dry Run Creek has no weight limit posted on either side.

That could all change soon. Borough Manager Gene Zarayko informed council at Thursday's meeting an engineering firm has been contracted to inspect the bridge and come up with a weight limit for vehicles.

"The engineer is working on it, right now," Zaraylo said.

Zarayko said Allen Township earlier posted weight restrictions on a bridge on Willowbrook Road.
