Borough residents to get 'What's Happening'

The Borough of Northampton is preparing to launch a newsletter that will be mailed to borough residents.

The publication will inform townspeople about matters the administration and borough council consider to be of interest.

Titled "What's Happening," Borough Manager Gene Zarayko disclosed on Friday the newsletter is now at the printers and will be ready for mailing to residents in the next several days. The newsletter will include several pages of items, including some about which the borough hopes to hear from residents.

The publication will be free to borough residents. Zarayko said presently plans call for the newsletter to be published once a year.

Heading the newsletter effort is Victor Rodite, borough consultant on community affairs, who has been instrumental for many years in obtaining and shepherding Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) through state and other channels.

The front page, according to Zarayko, will deal with housing, including what borough property owners need to know when applying for a CDBG grant. The grants generally provide funding for homeowners needing to meet standards for issues involving codes, electrical and plumbing. The borough processes the applications in order to have a list of qualified candidates.

Northampton joins other neighboring communities which have newsletters published for its residents. Coplay, Allen Township and Whitehall Township have publications.
