Girls win showdown
The unbeaten list is down to one - and that one is Northampton.
The Konkrete Kids' softball team ended Bethlehem Catholic's unbeaten streak at 10 with the Kids' 1-0 victory Tuesday making Northampton unbeaten after 10 games.
Coach Sally Whittaker-Kahan's team is 6-0 in the Lehigh Valley Conference and 4-0 in nonleague competition and the Kids have already qualified for the District 11 playoffs with 10 games remaining.
"Going 10-0 is a dream come true for any coach," said Whittaker- Kahan. "But it's even more so for our girls. They kept their composure under pressure … against a very good team and before one of the largest Northampton crowds in years."
"I knew it would come down to the team making the first mistake and it worked that way for us," said the coach.
Sophomore Kendel Reed, making her first start of the season when Whittaker-Kahan had to juggle her lineup because of an injury to Taylor Kerbacher, was the big hero for the Kids.
Reed, who played left field, got things going for Northampton when she singled. Reed took off for second with Kendra Makovsky at bat. Becahi catcher Jenn Markovic's throw to get Reed at second was high and the ball went into center field. Reed came all the way around for the game's only run.
"Defense was the key," said Whittaker- Kahan. "It's what I expected from the girls. I expected it to be tough. Becahi is a good hitting team in their games."
Senior Marly Laubach struck out seven while allowing five hits and she pitched out of the first-and-third jams in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Laubach got two pop outs to end the threat and in the fifth an infield force out at third and grounder to Tori Gollie at third ended it.
Northampton picked up six hits off of Becahi's Joelle Morey, who struck out 11 Kids. Reed had two singles and Leandra Sterner, Megan Tiwold and Hannah Peters each had one and Gollie tripled in the sixth but was left stranded.
With wins over Dieruff and Central Catholic last week, the Kids continue play Thursday at Freedom and entertain Stroudsburg Saturday in a nonleague game.
Next week, the Kids' busy schedule has them at Central Catholic (Patriot's Park) Monday, at Saucon Valley Tuesday, at Allen Wednesday, and at Easton Friday.
