It's been a long journey, but Whitehall High School senior Gavin Lilly finally attained the rank of Eagle Scout April 7 in front of family, friends and fellow Scouts.

The Eagle Court of Honor ceremony, held at Faith Lutheran Church in Whitehall, was filled with congratulatory remarks and moments of reflection and joy.

Pinning the Eagle Scout medal on Gavin was his mother, Kimberly Lilly.

Gavin, who began Scouting in first-grade as a Tiger Cub, said he was overwhelmed by his accomplishment. He specifically credited both his mother and father, Kevin Lilly, for encouraging him.

"This very moment, I feel pretty awesome," he said. "Thanks for my family for being there and helping me, and nudging me along the way. You two are the best, ever."

Gavin said what kept him going were the experiences gained along the way. And, of course, the ultimate prize: Eagle Scout rank.

"The thought of becoming an Eagle Scout is what kept me going," he said. "It's just something that not everyone gets to go through." Only 4 percent of Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle.

During his Scouting career, Gavin was awarded a total of 27 merit badges, only 12 of which were required. He also had to serve six months as a Life Scout in a leadership position, complete a service project, appear before a board to present his project and convince the board he met all requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout.

For his Eagle Scout project, Gavin constructed five bicycle racks for the Whitehall-Coplay School District. The project took two and a half weeks to complete. Two racks are located at the soccer stadium, another two are placed at the football field and one is found at the tennis courts. He said he chose the project so students could ride their bikes to school, rather than utilize the bus.

"It saves the environment for the children," he said.

"I congratulate you on your fortitude and commitment," said Whitehall Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. Both Hozza and state Sen. Lisa Boscola, D-18, presented Lilly with certificates of recognition.

In addition to Scouting, Gavin is a member of the WHS film club and German club and a varsity member of the WHS soccer team.

After graduating, he plans to attend Lehigh Carbon Community College for two years, then transfer to Temple University's Tyler School of Art to major in graphic art and design.

The rank of Eagle will remain a part of his life, irrespective of where he goes or who he meets.

"Your position is one of honor and responsibility," said committee chair Denise Olejnick. "Your responsibilities go beyond scouting, to God and country. So live and serve so those who know you will be inspired."
