Northampton to purchase uptown tract

Northampton's Uptown Business District got a lift Thursday when borough council agreed to acquire a vacant lot on Main Street.

Council plans to transform the property, sandwiched between a church and coffee shop near the Roxy Theatre, into a farmers market and minipark.

Council adopted a resolution to purchase the 90- by 96-foot tract located at 1912-22 Main St. from Brian Kroope for $100,000.

Kroope initially sought $179,000 for the property. The borough's offer was based on $75,000, the previously appraised value of the property.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said both parties met in between on the price.

Only $35,000 of the listed price for the land comes from borough coffers, Zarayko said. The remaining $65,000 comes from a Monroe County gaming grant from the Mount Airy Casino.

The property decades ago served as a cotton goods shop run by the Kroope family. Several years ago, the vacant shop was leveled by a fire.

Zarayko said with council passing a resolution, an agreement of sale is being drawn up, along with other paperwork, so the transfer of the title of the tract of land can take place.

He also said some improvements to the tract can be made in house by public works personnel. The timing of developing the tract into a small park and farmers market could depend on future funding, including gaming grants.

The development of the tract is viewed by the borough as a major asset to the businesses on Main Street, and a place where residents can sit and rest, and enjoy the outdoor setting.

Councilman Anthony Lopsinzski Sr. said he has talked with business owners who like the borough's vision for the land.

Zarayko has in mind a number of future, tentative uses and plans for the land he will discuss in the future.

The minipark could include a gazebo for concerts, a change room for performers, restrooms, a landscaped walkway, fountain, benches, the rear with a green wall of shrubbery or high plantings and Victorian-style lampposts.
